Wrongful Dismissal???

Heather Mills, formerly married to Beatle Sir Paul McCartney is being sued by her nanny for "constructive dismissal and sex discrimination" alleging that a replacement was brought in when she returned from maternity leave and was downgraded to cleaning duties. It gets stickier in that the nanny, Sara Trumble apparently asked for money to pay for a breast enlargement that Mills declined to give her. The nanny was already given 10,000 pounds by her Sir Paul McCartney upon leaving. (Mills and McCartney are divorced.) http://www.martaperrone.com

NO SHOW EMPLOYEE

We sent from our Agency several candidates to interview with a very lovely family. They selected one candidate and after checking references immediately decided to hire her to begin working. The day arrives when she was supposed to begin and no one shows up. It was a terrible Father's Day for the family and for us representing the employee. All day we wondered what happened. How could this be...she never had done this before to us. We thought we knew her, and we certainly did not expect this behavior. The family was outraged after having made all these arrangements so that this new employee could begin working. Everyone involved was worried, disappointed, befuddled and ultimately angry over the situation.

Two days later, a call arrives explaining an illness that led to a hospital stay. Somehow the question still lies in why this candidate did not find a way to telephone us so that we knew what was happening. She could have had a friend or relative explain the problem instead of keeping us in the dark.

Communication, communication, communication....that is why we have cell phones, computers and blackberries so that we can get instant communication. Now, we just have to learn to use these tools readily so that we don't keep people in the dark.

WELCOME TO MY NEW BLOG, NOW LET'S TALK

This Blog is dedicated specifically to give all of you disgruntled, frustrated and confused household employers and employees a chance to write in and comment on the daily problems you are having with each other. From working on both sides for the last 20 years, I know the many situations that have caused problems and often times led to terminating the relationship. Although, in many instances, it is not a question of right from wrong, but more a personal choice, the first question is "who is the boss?" However, just because you have the label "boss" does not mean that you know how to be a good one. Employers constantly fail at conducting themselves properly with their household help. Strange as it seems, I have found that many high-powered executives appear lost as managers of their homes and staff. It is uncomfortable to find that your home is no longer a sanctuary because of the problems and attitude you face with the household help. In the same light, household employees are making the same mistakes at the workplace and have a limited understanding of how to conduct themselves with their employers. No one likes to work in a place where there is dissension and a sense of not feeling appreciated. So, you can see, this is a two-way street with real sides to each story from both perspectives.
